How Can Music and Rhythm Support Your Child’s Emotional Regulation?

Louise Brown is a Music Therapist and a Specialist Attachment Practitioner hosting an online Music, Rhythm and Regulation workshop for parents with Beacon Family Services. She explains how everyday music and rhythm help positive changes take place in the brain – and what to expect from the workshop!

Hi, I’m Louise. I run an independent therapy practice in my own purpose-designed therapy space in Devon.

I started my career as a primary school teacher before training to become a music therapist. I then completed further training to become a Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT), which is an advanced level evidence-based training, understanding how music and rhythm can create change in the brain. After working in the NHS for 10 years as a music therapist and clinical team manager, I then further trained in DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy) and am currently working through the practicum.

The priority in my work is supporting young people, their families/carers and extended systems to understand themselves and the way they respond and communicate.

I’m really excited to be facilitating a workshop for Connect for Parents about using music and rhythm to support emotional regulation.

Music, rhythm and emotional regulation for your child

No music experience needed!

For this workshop, no musical experience is necessary, and you won’t be asked to sing! We’ll be tapping into simple and accessible musical and rhythmic skills we all have to support our families’ regulation.

What I’m going to share is based on research, science and learning from the young people and families I’ve had the privilege to work alongside with.

I’ll be sharing some theory about why music works and creates changes quickly in our brains. Music creates a biochemical response in our brains and makes changes.

We’ll be thinking about what helps the brain to feel safe and regulated, based on the Beacon Family Services safe / struggling / drowning lighthouse model and how we can use music and rhythm through relationships with our children to support this feeling of being safe.

I will also be spending time going through a series of practical musical examples of activities and techniques to do alongside your child or young person to support their emotional regulation. There will be lots of take home ideas to try.

I can’t wait to meet you!
