How can I check you are qualified?
All therapists are appropriately qualified and registered with professional bodies. Beacon Family Services works with therapists who have trained with the Theraplay Institute.
Charlotte Jenkins is registered as a social worker with the HCPC and also enrolled with the Theraplay Institute and DDP Network. Please feel free to ask to view the certification. She was also named Theraplay Institute Student of the Month August 2018.
Is Theraplay® effective?
Theraplay has been accepted by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHASA) for inclusion on the national registry for evidence-based programs and practices you can read about that here.
Is DDP effective?
Dan Hughes developed Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy over 30 years ago and it is based on research and theories around attachment and caregiving, developmental trauma and neurobiology which inform the treatment model.
Research into adoptive parents experiences can be found here and there is strong qualitative research indicating its effectiveness.
Where will appointments happen?
How many sessions?
After assessment we will discuss with you what we feel will be right for you and your child. It is difficult to give an exact number. Sometimes a very specific number of sessions is right but in general anything from 12 weekly sessions to six months of sessions may be helpful. We will discuss and review together to make sure it is right for you and your child.
How long is each session?
Assessment and parent sessions can last around an hour. Sessions with children last between 30 and 45 minutes.
How do I pay?
If you are an individual paying for your child’s treatment we ask that the initial payment is made prior to assessment feedback. We will provide an invoice and you can make a BACS payment. Thereafter we will invoice you for payment prior to each session.
If you are representing an organisation we will request invoice details at booking and provide the service you require in the expectation that invoices are paid within 14 days of the date of the invoice.
We will provide Terms and Conditions.
I have more than one child what will happen?
We will always work with the child you are concerned about initially. We will focus on your relationship with them. Your other child can benefit from what you experience too. Perhaps while sessions happen they can have special time with another family member. We can discuss having some family sessions towards the end of our sessions together.
Do you work with schools?
Training is on offer for schools, and seeing a child in school is also possible.
We also offer a group Theraplay programme which is available for schools.
What if other people are helping us?
If you are working with any other professionals it is a good idea to let them know you are going to be working with Beacon Family Services. Some children may already be receiving support through CAMHS or other services and it is not the right time to work with us. We will ask you about this and give you advice.
What about confidentiality?
All information is stored confidentially. Beacon Social Work is registered with the Information Commissioner.
If there are any concerns about the welfare of your child or anyone else we are obliged to advise the relevant authorities. If your information needs to be shared we will always try to talk to you about it first.
Where do you offer services?
We are based in Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham and work throughout the Midlands.
